Altar Servers are the principal assistants of the celebrating priest and deacon during the liturgy. In that role, altar servers are responsible for many duties, including:
* carrying the crucifix and candles during processions,
* holding the missal and other liturgical books for the priest celebrant,
* preparing the altar for the Eucharist, and
* assisting with the setup and cleanup of the sanctuary before and after services.
As the most visible lay persons in the church, the altar servers are called to be models for the rest of the congregation as they pray, sing, and listen attentively during the liturgy.
Any Catholic, whether an adult or a child, can be an altar server at Saint Ignatius Martyr, provided that the Catholic:
* is at least 10 years old,
* has received first Holy Communion,
* has completed altar server training (administered at least yearly) and observations, and
* is willing and able to attend continuing server education as required by the parish.
In addition, servers and server candidates that are 18 years or older are to complete and remain compliant with the diocese's Ethics and Integrity in Ministry program.
If you or one of your young ones are interested in joining this essential liturgical service, please contact the altar server coordinator at altarservers@st-ignatius.org for the current schedule of server trainings and for more information.
Saint Stephen, patron of altar servers, pray for us.
