Ash Wednesday is a holy day of the Church of universal fast and abstinence. It begins the season of Lent. It's liturgies are characteristically marked by the faithful receiving ashes on their foreheads. The ashes are branches of olive trees or palm branches which have been blessed the previous year. The Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass is also omitted. Moreover, while a holy day, it not a day of obligation.

Do you have unused palms from last year? Bring them to the church beginning Saturday, February 23 for proper disposal. Fr. John will be burning them and using them in our Ash Wednesday liturgies. Collection boxes are in the Narthex of the Church from Feb. 23-March 3.
A webpage with parish resources and events, diocesan retreats, and other information regarding the season will be forthcoming soon!
