The Legion of Mary is recognized by the Holy See as an International Association of the Faithful. It was founded in Dublin, Ireland in 1921 as a Marian movement by Frank Duff. His idea was to help ordinary Catholic laypeople fulfill their baptismal promises by enabling them to live a life dedicated to the Church in an organized structure, supported by fraternity and prayer. The Legion draws its inspiration from St. Louis Marie de Montfort’s book, True Devotion to Mary, which promotes a “total dedication” to Christ through devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This book also influenced St. John Paul II, who mentions it in his apostolic letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae.
The Legion of Mary is made up of Catholic men and women dedicated to prayer and service. Members meet weekly to pray, plan, and go out in pairs to visit the sick, share the Catholic faith, and support those in spiritual need. Open to Catholics 18 and older, the Legion is active in nearly every country, and in almost every parish throughout the Diocese of Austin.
